would be The Bates Association,which was founded in 1907.
They have a wealth of information covering the early Bates
of New England. URL furnished if needed.

A source that best responds to your 2nd question ia a four
page article published in the November 2010 edition
of the "Bates Booster" newsletter titled
"Bates DNA Project Explained."
