Gilbert Bates of VA & New England Origins
Posted by: Earl MacFarland (ID *****1994) Date: February 24, 2011 at 19:58:20

Couple of items here:

a)Gilberts son John N Bates, who was living in 1880 in Iowa, stated on the 1880 Census that his father was born in NEW YORK and his mother in Conn
b) see other postings re the DNA angle, pointing to the New England Bates as an origin for this line, but the reference to a John Bates in Hampstead LI NY, in 1664, is very vague and difficult to prove
c) Perhaps more significat is the fact that Samuel Covey father of Rachel, was from Dutchess Co NY himself
d) 1777 Tax records for Dutchess Co/ Putnam Co, NY, show both a Samuel Covey, and an Isaac Bates, but also a John Bates
e) the Rev War pension Roll for Tenn 1835, states that Samuel Covey collected a Rev War penaion for service as a Pvt in the New York Militia

Conclusion: The frequent claim that Isaac Bates, father of Gilbert, was the son of the Isaac Bates of "Skimeno", York Co, Virginia is totally misleading and in error.
