Mr. Davis, I'm back on the hunt for James M. Bates's father. Something one of my uncles, b. 1896, said when I would ask him about the homestead keeps cropping up in my mind with questions.

The homestead now and then consiste of approx. 200 acres. From memory, my uncle said the bulk of the property had been homesteaded and part had been acquired from other family members after they moved to Arkansas. Fast forward to BLM records. The property in Neshoba Co. MS I'm speaking of was homesteaded by a James Alpha Bates.

I know the property deed was in the hands of James M. Bates b. 1812 GA, then James Fulford Bates b. 1852 AL. The Homestead Entry was signed on May 20, 1862. From census records I know JMB moved from AL to MS after 1858 and before 1860, children's birth year and state. All this time I have been thinking there had been a mistake on the middle name of James and it was JMB who first filed for homestead.

What got me to thinking down a different avenue was finding a copy of my father's birth certificate. On the certificate it states his father was born in Sumter Co. AL
instead of Dallas Co. Al where they appeared on the 1850 Census.

1830 a James A Bates b. 1788 GA is in Green Co. AL, 10 free white people and 9 slaves.
On the 1840 Census there is a James A Bates with a total of 9 free white people and a total of 16 slaves. This James A Bates, b. 1788 GA is in Smith Co. MS in 1850 with wife Sally and children Ann and Margaret and a number of slaves.

Now my memory goes back to something one my older cousins told me. He said JMB moved to MS because his family was there. I know he was kin to a Mathew Bates b. Virginia., living in Neshoba Co. I've never figured out how they
were connected.

Do you think this James Alpha Bates b. 1788 GA could be a son of Daniel BATES b. 1756 VA.

Until later,
Susie Bates
