James Batterton of Mason Co., KY
James Batterton came down the Ohio River in 1776, landed at Maysville in Mason Co., KY, and built cabins and marked trees. This would be the same James who claimed a presumption of 1000 acs. of land on account of marking and improving the same in the year 1776. this land lay on the Mill Cr. waters of the north fork of Licking Creek, about two or three miles from the mouth of that creek. the court were of the opinionthat batterton has a right to a preemption of 1000 acres of land to include said improvements [Certif. Book of the VA LandComm. 1779-80] This James was killed by the Indians. Who inherited his property?
