Origin of BATY name? (at least 1 story)

I am very interested in finding out more about my ancestry. I only know of the BATY name 3 generations back. My great grandfater was named Luther Lane (b.? - d.1976), and had two sons Joe Terrell (b.1910 - d.1999) and Clinton (b.? - d.). I think they were originally from the Lavonia, Hartwell area of Georgia, but eventually moved to Greenville, SC. But, Id like to scratch the surface further. Hopefully, someone can help. There is a story I have heard at holidays and stuff, about the name and origins, but it sounds a little sketchy - see if you agree.

Story is, in the early 1800's two brothers lived in Nevada. They were named Beatty (or Beaty or something along those lines). Apperently the brothers were not fond of each other, and after a heated argument, one of the brothers moved east. He signed is signature very sloppily, and people commonly mistaked his last name as 'Baty', and soon he adopted the name.

Does anyone know anything about this? I know it is sketchy and far-fetched.

Kit Baty
Atlanta, Ga.
