Hi, folks

I'm Ian Charles Batty, son of Leonard William Charles Batty and Joyce Dorothea Batty (nee Gursansky). I'm working in Japan at present, but I grew up in Adelaide and have lived in Hawthorn, Melbourne for some 30 years.

My late father grew up in Mount Gambier (south-east South Australia), son of Roger Arthur Thomas Batty, and his wife, whose maiden name was Free. My father was in Tobruk during the siege - he was one of the famous "Rats".

My mother (still living) is the author of "Namatjira, Wanderer Between Two Words", the biography of the famous Aboriginal artist, Albert Namatjira. Mum was born and raised in Rosedale (originally Rosenthal) just outside the Barossa valley - hence the German/Polish name. Her ancestors arrived from Germany in the 1850s.

Mum has managed to trace details on my father's "Free" side of the family, but is having difficulty with the "Batty" lineage. She did say once that the family came from Kent, but she's not sure about where she heard this.

Can you give me any more info on likely places to look, or any more of the lineage?

Cheers,

Ian Batty.
