HENRY CLAY BUGHMAN, coal-operator, Pittsburgh, was born in Allegheny City, March 22, 1848. He is the second child of REUBEN BUGHMAN, who was born in Westmoreland Co., Pa., and came to Pittsburgh when a youth, about the year 1834, to enter the wholesale grocery-store of his uncle, JACOB PAINTER, in which he became a partner and continued till his death, which occurred Sept. 22, 1865, when was 47 years old. He was also interested in iron-manufacturing. He married ANNE E., daughter of JAMES H. and MARY HAYS, latter of whom died Oct. 12, 1887, in her 66 year. Their eldest child, ANNA H., died Sept. 22, 1870. The youngest, JAMES HAYS, is a teller in the Citizens National Bank. JAMES HARDEN HAYS, father of MRS. BUGHMAN, was of Scotch and French extraction. His immediate ancestors were settlers in Eastern Maryland, when toward the close of the last century they moved across the mountains to Pa., and finally located near Pittsburgh. He was born in Mifflin Twp., in 1800, and died March 30, 1876. His wife survived him till 1882. HENRY C. BUGHMAN was reared in Allegheny, and graduated at the Pa. Military Academy, Chester, as a civil engineer, in 1868. Next year he entered the Keystone Bank of Pittsburgh, as an assistant, and resigned as cashier in 1875. He soon entered the employ of his uncles, HENRY B. and JOHN S. HAYS, who were engaged in mining and shipping coal. From 1878 to 1881, as vice-president, he represented the Waverly Coal & Coke Co., in New York City and the east. In the latter year he became a director in the Citizensí National Bank and Pittsburgh Bank for Savings, and is now a vice-president of the last-named institution. After the death of H. B. HAYS, in 1881, he became a trustee of the estate of JAMES H. HAYS, and since the death of J. S. HAYS, in 1882, has been sole trustee. In 1871 he married MARIA, daughter of GEORGE A. BERRY, and they have four children, named GEORGE BERRY, VIRGINIA FRANCES, GENEVIEVE and HENRY CLAY. MR. BUGHMAN has been an elder in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church since 1882, and in politics he is republican.
