Louisa,
I saw your post today and thought I would tell you what I know about Solomon Jacob Baughman. He is my grandfather. My Father was Charles Sherman Baughman. There is another Solomon Jacob Baughman who was the brother of Stephen J. Baughman who is probably Solomon Jacobs (my grandfather's) father so the other Solomon Jacob is probably his Uncle.
My grandfather's death certificate states a Stephen as his father. That information was given by his son Ernest, my uncle. There is a Stephen J. Baughman living in Brookfield, Linn Co., Missouri in 1900 according to the 1900 Missouri Census. Solomon Jacob and Sherman are also living in the same town but at different locations. Stephen had a son with Emma Spooner, whom he married in 1896. The son, Franklin would be Solomon's half brother if it is indeed the same. Irma, one of Solomon's daughters has indicated that she remembers Franklin (she mentioned this to her daughter) and if this is the case then that just about nails down the particular Stephen as my great grandfather.
The death certificate states that Solomon was born in Illinois but I have other conflicting info that he may have beenborn in Missouri. I think Illinois is more probable but I have not been able to find him in the census to confirm. I have other info that also mentions Taylorsville but I'm not sure where that comes from. In talking to one of my uncles about it before his death he didn't know who his grandfather was so they apparently didn't spend a lot of time on the past. I believe that William Sherman Baughman was Solomon's full brother although it appears as with Franklin that there were some other 1/2 brothers (at least 1). There was also a Garfield who I think was also a full brother. You may have more info on this than I have. I don't have a lot on Stephen from his birth (about 1850) until he shows up in Missouri in 1900.
In any case, if you have anything that might shed some more light on Stephen J. or Franklin or whoever, I would be appreciative if you could contact me. Thank you.
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
Richard
