Margaret BAYARD, married in New York City 1766

I'm trying to identify the parents of Margaret BAYARD, my wife's ggggg grandmother. She married William SHERIFF on 2nd March 1766 at Trinity Church, New York City. Descendents of theirs wrote, sometime around 1900-1920, that her parents were "Col Sam BAYARD by Elizabeth VAN CORDTZANDT" (sic), but I can find no reference to such a couple. Plenty of Col Sam BAYARD's but none who married a VAN CORDLANDT. Margaret left the US after the War of Independence and settled in Hampshire, England, dying there in 1812. Any help / pointers would be appreciated.
