Re: Baze Family History
David, here is census info for Abednego Baze.It does not appear that the Mary listed with him in the 1850 census could have biologically been the mother of at least two of the older male children attributed to him.The Mary in that census shows an age of 50 years. If the age given is so, she would have been apprx. 9 yrs of age at the time of the first child, Hyrum. 12 and 14 yrs. apprx., at the birth of John and William Benjamin.I know it is possible for a woman to conceive at the age of 12 to 13 yrs., but before 9, well, that's really stretching it.
Their is a recorded marriage of a Mary Schults in 1809.There definitely is a recorded marriage to Sarah Pinkley or Pinkney in 1858, Barry County. This Sarah, I sincerely do not believe is the mother of Abednego's children.I don't know if someone, initially, only saw the 1860 census, which reflects Abednego with Sarah, and presumed Sarah was the mother of all of the children. And then later someone, in further research, noted the woman with Abednego in the 1850 census is named Mary.
I know it is confusing.Basically, because there is alot of confusion.I'm not sure anyone, at this point, really knows.I know I can't state for sure.I do believe it possible Mary could be the mother of Jesse Henry Baze, possibly even Jefferson Peter, and even William Benjamin.I don't believe she is the mother of Hyrum, nor even John.
I have never found a first hand document reflecting specifically the name of the woman enumerated with Abednego in 1830 and 1840.It could have been a Sarah or a Mary, or both! It's a matter of calculation. In my case, I can only presume, (very bad in genealogy), that my ancestor's, Jesse Henry, mother is Mary, and the children after Jesse Henry?Maybe Mary, too.Based on census, Mary appears to have died after 17 October 1850 census and before 20 Feb. 1858. (I have found no record of divorce.) I think you can safely eliminate Sarah Pinkley/Pinkney as the mother of any of Abednego's children. Besides that, Pinkney or Pinkley, is most likely Sarah's name from a former marriage.Note Sarah's age in the 1860 census.Note also, it appears that two girl children, attributed to Hyrum, married into the Pinkney/Pinkley family.
As to the name of the mother of the older children attributed to Abednego, I can't state fact.I truly wish I could.Maybe someone else can.
Regarding Abednego, Sr. being 1/2 Indian, I have found no proof.Doesn't mean it's not the case, just I haven't seen documentation. There is rumor that he was killed by Indians, and there is also rumor the oldest son attributed to him, Hyrum, was killed by Indians. Both, according to Barry County probate records, appear to have died sometime in 1866. Abednego, before 29 Mar 1866, and Hyrum, before 7 Dec 1866. These are NOT death dates. These are dates estates were appraised or inventoried. Some people don't seem to understand that, and have used the estate appraisement dates as dates of death. Below is census information I have researched:
1830 Federal Census McNairy Co., TN-Abednego Baze: lists five female and seven males in the family.Three of the males are in the same age brackett that include the ages of William Benjamin, Jefferson Peter, and Dock Baze.Hyrum had already married Unicy Blythe.Maybe even John had.Early McNairy County marriage records were destroyed in a fire, as were Buckingham County, VA records.
1840 Federal Census McNairy Co., TN:
Abednago Baze: 1 male under 5; 1 male 5 and under 10; 1 male 10 and under 15; 1 male 50 and under 60 (Abednego); 1 female under 5; 1 female 10 and under 15; 1 female 15 and under 20; 1 female 40 and under 50 (probably his spouse).
