Way back when...people spelled the way they pronounced.If you ever see old Scottish script you can actually "read" the accent.The problem is,back in the early 1800's and before,there was no standardized way of spelling.Then,to confuse matters more,clerics,census-takers,registrars,etc.,
spelled names the way THEY saw fit!I have seen my ancestor's name spelled Beal,Bell,Bealle by others but by their own hand Beall.Thomas D. Beall II
