ANN CHAMBERLAIN & DAVID BEATTY, md c1789 IN PA
Ann Chamberlain (b. c1750) and Martha Chamberlain (b. 1755) were the daughters of Jeremiah Chamberlain (1707-1776) & Marjery Hamilton (1716-1795), of York Co., PA. Their brothers' names were John, James, and Ninian. According to abstracts of Jeremiah's will, both of the daughters m. Beattys. Martha m. Benjamin Beatty, of York Co., in c1775. He was a Revolutionary hero who had been with Washington during the crossing of the Delaware. The Beattys moved to Westmoreland Co. in western PA in c1810 and were apparently instrumental in the early development of that area. (The family of Benjamin and Martha Beatty is included as Lineage #103 in the Beatty Project 2000 website on RootsWeb.)
Information on sister Ann and her Beatty husband is much sketchier. According to records in IGI North America, an Ann Chamberlain, b. 1750, m. a David Beatty somewhere in PA in c1789. (Some sources claim the marriage was earlier, which it would have to have been for Ann to be listed as a Beatty in her father's 1776 will.) David's DOD is listed here as Jan. 1816. Elsewhere, his birth yr. is put at c1746.
Beatty Lineage #102 of the Beatty Project 2000 is that of a David Beaty, d. 1815, and wife Margaret [Johnston], of Butler Co., OH. Their children are David Jr., Ninian, Jeremiah, John, Margery, and Mary. This is the beginning of a long line of Beatys--Davids, Ninians (or Nenians), Jeremiahs, Johns, etc.--in Butler Co., OH, and later Jersey Co., IL, many of whom were prominent citizens in their respective communities. Censuses document much of the story. One of the early Nenians is said in the published histories of Jersey Co., IL, to have been b. in PA in 1787 and to have been the son of a Revolutionary War captain, David Beaty, who was later one of the pioneer settlers of Butler Co., OH. (The Beatys moved to Jersey Co., IL, in the 1850s.) Some of the earlier records claim that Capt. David's father was also named David.
Because the information regarding the PA and early OH Beattys is usually hard to come by and often conflicting, I do not as yet know just what to make of the above facts. Are they simply coincidental or is this indeed the same family? Evidently, the name "David" was a Beatty/Beaty family name well before the arrival of the first David Beaty in Butler Co., OH. But what of such names as "Ninian," "Jeremiah," and "Margery," which, taken together, were a "trademark" of the York Co., PA, Chamberlains? How did they come to be used and repeated by the OH Beatys? But, if there was indeed a blood connection between the PA Chamberlains and Beattys, on the one hand, and the OH Beattys, on the other, how can we reconcile the apparently conflicting presence of an Ann Chamberlain and a Margaret Johnston? Was there another generation in between or a second marriage for David? What is more, while Benjamin Beatty's father has been alleged to be a certain Samuel Beatty, of PA, I can so far find no connection between the latter and any of the Davids. There are other troubling questions as well.
It would certainly be a serious mistake to see a family relationship where there wasn't any. Family naming patterns in and of themselves are by no means proof of blood ties. Nor is the Ann Chamberlain-David Beatty marriage or the apparent PA orgin of the Butler, OH, Beatys solid evidence of such a link. What I am looking for, then, is additional information that can be used to conclusively prove--or disprove--the family relationship in question. I would appreciate any such contributions that you can make in that regard.
