LOWELL -- Erwin A.Wuester, Lt. Colonel Air Force (Ret.) died Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Saints Medical Center after a brief illness, aged 80 years. He was the beloved husband of Arlene (Cooper) Wuester with whom he would have celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary in July.
Born in Pompton Lakes New Jersey, the son of the late Erwin and Freda (Beckmann) Wuester, he received his early education in the Pompton Lakes School System, graduating from Pompton Lakes High School in 1947. He matriculated at Lafayette College-Eastern Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He then entered Lowell Textile Institute, Lowell Massachusetts, graduating in 1953 with a B.S. degree in Textile Manufacturing. He completed one year of textile engineering graduate school before entering the Air Force in 1954 as a 2nd Lieutenant. Mr. Wuester served his country as both an active duty officer and a reservist for a combined total of 35 years. He served as a navigator with the Air Force 552nd Aircraft Early Warning & Control Wing and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1989.
Mr. Wuester began his textile industry career at Linen Thread Company in Patterson New Jersey, moved on to Coats and Clark in New York and then Malden Mills in Lawrence Massachusetts. At the time of his retirement in 2003, he was Senior Textile Technologist at Natick Research, Development & Engineering Center where he was the recipient of numerous awards, earning a reputation as one of the country's foremost authorities on parachutes. One of the highlights of Mr. Wuester's career was his development of drogue parachutes for NASA's Space Shuttle.
He leaves his wife Arlene Wuester, sisters Evelyn Dingle and Ann McGuire, daughter Karen Theusen and her husband David, stepsons Charles Gordon and his wife Gail, Douglas Gordon and his wife Diane, grandchildren David Gordon, Dr. Susan Gordon, Rebecca Steinbach and Deborah Ben David, great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and James Steinbach, Evan and Nathaniel Ben David. --
