I can't be sure it's the same family, but it certainly seems possible. Since my original post, I've learned that his parents were John Bednar, born about 1853, and Mary Magdaline Kurceva, born in 1854. Both died before 1938.

The 1900 census gave their birthplaces as Bohemia, but John Bednar's obituary [1938]says he was born in Czechoslovakia -- just a reflection of changing geography, I'm sure.

The family came to this country in 1887 and settled in Kansas, moving to northwestern Oklahoma Co. in 1890.
