name variation? France/Serbo-Croatia

My grandfather arrived in the states, from France, in the early 1900's (prior to WWI). My father was born in the states, circa 1917.
I understand that my grandfather moved to France at an early age (?from Serbo-Croatia?) where he studied painting. He supposedly had a brother that stayed behind, in Serbo-Croatia.
We have always thought that the family (?one branch?) moved there from Italy, however, no dates/hard data are available.

Is there a connection to the Belinowski Family?
