The one additional news story I referred to relates how one of David Cooper's sons died in an accident, when he was kicked by a horse while on a visit to his uncle, Eben Bell.
"FATAL ACCIDENT.
-DANIEL FREMONT COOPER, son of Mr. and Mrs. DAVID COOPER, of this place [Rochester, IN], went on a visit last Friday, to his uncle, Mr. EBEN BELL, near Chili, in Miami county. …one of the horses kicked out violently at the boy, striking him squarely in the abdomen. …Tuesday afternoon at 2:20 he silently passed away."

So, you clearly seem to have uncovered the right group of people. Newspaper stories are rife with misspellings and other errors (Eben/Ebon). I did newspaper work for a while…
But I may have a lead that will answer a few of the questions that have arisen. Through some earlier research, I located one very distant line of relatives [Baker] who go back to Elizabeth (Baker) Lowe. She was the mother to nine children, including Amy Ann, who married my David Cooper. I have learned that of her eight siblings, Elizabeth apparently had four sisters. One of them might have married into the Bell surname, and that is the next logical place for me to proceed in pursuing this question. I will post again here after I have figured out a few of the difficulties and located the appropriate misplaced files. Thanks for keeping my fires burning on this question! So many questions, and so little time!
