I too have a Bell puzzle. My gggrandfather was Reason Bell, b, 1817. Census reports state he was born in SC but older family members say it was NC.
I have been able to trace him to Gilmer County, GA, circa 1850 but have not found him PRIOR to that. He is NOT any other Reason Bell that is found online; i.e., Reason Alexander, Reason Chestnut, or any other Reason found in online information. Much of the information that is found online regarding this particular Reason Bell states he is Reason Ransom Bell who married Louisa (J) Donovan. We have concluded the name Ransom is NOT his middle name. Neither is Louisa's maiden name Donovan. (I can elaborate if necessary).
Our Reason did not marry Louisa J Donovan, as our Louisa (Last name unknown) was born between 1818 and 1820. She is also his one and only wife. We have documented this family from their marriage around 1837 to Reason's death about 1869 (and followed much of the family past that) but cannot find siblings or parents of our Reason Bell PRIOR to 1850.
If anyone might be able to help find his ancestry and his siblings to verify what Bell family he came from, whether North or South Carolina, I would be forever indebted.
It might even help solve many other Bell mysteries if we could find out who our Reason Bell is.
