Bellman Family Tree - Complete from 1587
Our Branch of the Family has been traced back through Parish Records to an earliest date of 1587 in Plymouth UK.
I have this document available in Word Format should anyone be interested.
The following is a quote from this Document:
"There is warrant for the assumption that the family name was originally Bellesmain or Bellmaine, meaning “a fair hand” and that an ancestor came to England from Caen, Normandy at the time of the Conquest. A Richard Bellesmain is referred to in the Battle Abbey Roll of 1066. A reference to Canon Johanne Bellman of Exeter in 1159/60 speaks of a grant of land to him in Dorset and Somerset by King Henry VI.
There follow many references to the family in Westmorland. In particular, Richard Bellmayn of Westmorland (West Ward) married Anne, daughter of a William Newton.
One son of this marriage, Robert, is traced to “Delamore”, Cornwood, Devon. He married Dorithie Marchant of “Lime” in Dorset at St Andrews, Plymouth in 1591. He is buried in Cornwood Church, and described as “Captaine in Ye Queen Elizabeth’s service”. His children and grand children were all baptised, married and buried in St Andrews, Plymouth. It is conjectured that John, born in or about 1562, who married Susan Fontwell as shown below, was related to Capt. Robert Bellman but there is no positive record of this."
