Julius C. Bement, death date & burial info ?
Lynda Darby Ozinga 9/03/03
1850 census of Skaneateles, New York
233 Bement, Edward 2 159
234 Bement, Frances 5 159
235 Bement, Julies 37 159
236 Bement, Ruben 9 159
237 Bement, Sarah 29 159
Julius C. Bement married Charlotte Johnson in 1857 in Huron Co, Ohio, apparently without divorcing his wife Sarah Darling Bement, from New York, as he is in the Columbus Ohio State Penitentiary for bigamy in 1860, occupation listed as "lecturer".He served the prescribed 1 yr sentence, got out, joined the Civil War as a colonal from Ohio.He was only in the service for 3 months in 1862 when he was discharged for medical reasons.
What happened to him, where did he die, where is he buried?Ohio?
Sarah Darling Bement is listed as "Divorced by the laws of the State of New York on the 1865 census of Groton, Tompkins Co, New York.Living with her are son Reuben, age 23, tailor; son Ed, son William, Dau Sarah. Dau Frances lives with the Darby family in McLean in 1865.Reuben is never seen again on census & we do not know what became of him. Where did he die? When?
Sarah lists herself as "widowed"on the 1870 census of Clarksville, Iowa; She is also listed as widowed & Father listed as deceased on Will's marriage license in 1877, & Sarah's marriage license in 1884.This indicates Julius Bement died before between 1862 & before 1870.Would appreciate any information on death/burial of Julius C. Bement born 1813 approx & son Reuben Bement born 1841 [email protected]
