Scott:
I can't remember if I sent this to you or not:
Nils Peter Bengtson/Bengtsson, b. 3 Nov 1836 in Runsten Congregation, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden; d. 26 Dec 1911 at sea; r. at sea; m. 16 Jun 1865 in Sandby Congregation, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden; Ingrid Kristina (Christina/Christine) Johansdotter/Johansson, b. 30 Nov 1842 in Sandby Congregation, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden; d. 25 Aug 1895 in Arnot, Bloss Twp., Tioga Co., PA, USA; r. Swedish Lutheran Cemetery, Arnot, Bloss Twp., Tioga Co., PA, USA.If I remember correctly, her name is listed as Christine on her headstone. Also, I found a picture of one of the churches (I believe it was Runsten) on line.Quite fascinating!
Children:
(1) Augusta Mathilda (Matilda) Bengtson/Bengtsson, b. 17 June 1866 in Norre Mockleby Congregation, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden; d. 2 Mar 1916 in Arnot, Bloss Twp., Tioga Co., PA, USA; m. 5 Aug 1886 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Arnot, Bloss Twp., Tioga Co., PA, USA, John Albert Andersson/Bergquist, b. 24 Aug 1861 in Sweden.Their children were:
Augusta Elnora Andersson/Bergquist (Nora)
Emma Dorothea Andersson/Bergquist
Andre Wilhelm Andersson/Bergquist
Nils Daniel (Daniel Nels) Bergquist
Esther Christina Bergquist (Christina)
Paul Reinhold Bergquist
John Andersson Bergquist changed the family name sometime prior to our grandfather's birth, as his name appears as Nils Daniel Bergquist on his christening certificate.
(2) Anneli Christina Albertina Bengtson/Bengtsson, b. abt. 1869 in Norre Mockleby Congregation, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden, d. and r. in Oland, Kalmar, Sweden
(3) Johan Albert Bengtson/Bengtsson, b. 16 Jul 1873 in Norre Mockleby, Oland, Kalmar, Sweden; d. 8 Dec 1829 prob. Arnot, Bloss Township, Tioga Co., PA, USA.Marital status unknown.
Don W. Carlson was kind enough to research the Swedish Emigration CD records and found:
Nils Peter Bengtson, age 37, from N. Mockleby parish in Kalmar Co., left Goteborg on 2 May 1873 for Corning (NY).He was traveling with S. A. Johansson, age 21; Joh. Gustaf Nilsson, age 18; Jon Andersson, age 50; Per Alfred, age 19.
Christine Johansson, age 36, from Mockleby parish, Kalmar Co., left Goteborg on 30 May 1879 for NY.She was traveling w/Mathilda Bengtson, age 11, and Joh. Albert Bengtson, age 6.
As you can see, Anneli never made it to the U.S., and Johan Albert never met his father until he was almost 7 years old!If I remember correctly, Grandpa said that Nils Peter Bengtson did not like life in the U.S. and returned to the sea and Sweden--I question his date of death, but then, there were no social security programs back then, so I guess a 75 year old man could have been working on a ship when he died.I guess Christine figured if she made it through all those years in Sweden without Nils, she could make it in the U.S., too!?!I wonder if S. A. Johansson was a brother of Kristina's--the ages would be about right.Apparently Corning was a big place for Swedish emigrants to head to--many Swedish names found there in the 1880s and 1890s.
Oh, yeah, I took a look at John Anderson Bergquist's letter of intention dated 1897, that he arrived in the U.S. about June 1880 in the port of New York (Aunt Nancy gave me a copy of the intenttion). The naturalization went through many years later and is on-line on the Joyce Tice website for Tioga Co., PA.
Talk to you soon!
Lynne
