If your William Benn (b.1815) and my John Benn 1(b.1812) were brothers, then their father may have been another John Benn, born sometime around 1790. He was in the Royal British Navy and lived in Deptford, England, where my John Benn was born. The 1812 John Benn was married to an Anne Smith. I think she was a Scottish woman. I am not 100 per cent sure of my facts.

John and William were, of course, very popular names at the time, so it's easy to follow the wrong person, but I think this much is pretty firm.
