Joshua Benner in North Carolina (mid to late 1800s)
I am looking for information on the origins of my gg grandfather, Joshua H. Benner, who married Sarah(Sallie) Malone and resided in Chatham County, NC.He was born about 1829 in PA and left home when his mother died and his father remarried. He was a carpenter and first appears in NC in the 1860 Federal census. A researcher wrote that his middle name was Henretta, that he had a brother named Israel and several half brothers, and that he was born in Wilkesbarre, PA.We are not sure if this information is accurate. Names of his children were John Henry (born 1865 and my maternal great grandfather), William Penn, Katie, Elizabeth, Sarah (Sallie), Joshua and Mary. Family legend is that he was Pennsylvania Dutch German, however, this is not confirmed.
