My great-great-great-aunt, Cynthia Ann WITHERS, married Leander BERARD ca 1867, possibly in New Mexico (then a territory) since their daughter Flora (Lorex?) was born there, according to the 1870 & 1900 Censuses.
In the 1870 Census Leander is listed as head of household. He and his wife & daughter are living with:
Ambrose BERARD, age 68, farmer
All of these people, except Cynthia & Flora, were born in Canada.
In the 1900 Census, Leander (b. Dec. 1837 in Canada) is said to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1852. His wife and daughter are the only other BERARDs in the household; however the housekeeper is 19-year-old Johanna SULIVAN, whose father was born in Ireland, mother in Canada.
Cynthia (WITHERS) BERARD was still alive in 1904 when she is mentioned in the obituary of her brother, Henry Clay WITHERS. At that time she was living in Beatrice, Nebraska.
I would love to hear from anybody connected to this family.
