Yolanda, The LePines sure spent a lot of time in Louisiana as they would winter there each year, this went on for several generations.I am sure that they often had two families as has been suggested to me. I have no real proof of this . I am unaware of being related to the Gilchrists that you mention. My husband Don's family came from the island of Islay in the inner heberdies of Scotland. They came out in the 1840's. Don and I have gone to Islay twice. Last year we went with our children and grandchildren for the month of August and did a lot of research on the Gilchrist family as well as other family lines as all of my husband Don's people came from Islay. The related family names were Beaton, McArthur, McMillan, Muir, Calder. All kept on marrying these same families for a few more generations in Canada. Almost every Gilchrist I have met could trace their ancestery back to Islay . This island is very small, about 30 miles long and 15 miles across. It has a polulation of 3500 people now but back in the mid 1800's there were 15000 there. In the 1870 or so the Lairds decided to move the tenant farmers off of their land and raise sheep. Many of the islander's passage to Canada was paid by the Laird [Ramsay]. Most of the land on Islay is still owned by Lairds. There are 4 of them now. One Canadian, One Englishman, One German and I think the other is a Scot but I am not sure. It would be interesting to know if your family was from Islay. Nice hearing from you . Lena Gilchrist
