Hi all,
I'm researching my family lineage, and have come up against a brick wall with my great great grandmother's line. Let me tell you what I know, what I've heard, and what I would like to find out...
My great great grandmother's name was Marie, surname has been listed variously as Berard, Bernard, Benard, Bearor, and Bean. I know that she was born about 24 Nov 1835, in Canada from her death certificate. I also know these are notoriously inaccurate at times, but it's good place to start. I know Marie married Charles Lafrance 21 Nov 1854, in Henryville, Iberville Co., Quebec, from the parish records of St. George, Henryville. This records names her parents as Thomas Bernard and Marie Thuot. I know Marie Thuot died 24 Dec 1886, as it was noted in the same parish register. There was no information regarding her husband Thomas. I know Marie (Bernard), had at least two brothers, Toussaint and Pierre, and three sisters, Marguerite, Osithe and Rosalie, all married at St. George. I know she and Charles Lafrance moved to Highgate Vermont, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Marie died 07 Jan 1911 and is buried in the Catholic cemetery. Her gravestone says Mary Bean.

Now to what I've heard... a few years ago, I met one of her grandsons, he was quite old, and I was telling him of the troubles I was having finding out anything about my Canadian Ancestors who had settled in Vermont, their names were constantly being corrupted. He agreed, then he surprised me by telling me that Marie Bernard was originally named Mary Little Bear. He said he found documentation that she was born south of Montreal and was of the Bear Clan. He promised to look for the information for me and give me a copy. Unfortunately he died soon after, and I've never seen the documentation. I'm guessing from his information that Marie and her family might have been from Kahnawake, but it's only a guess. I don't know how to go about finding out if it's true.

I would like to find any information about the family, or even how to go about finding information. I live in San Antonio, but I get home to VT/Canada almost every summer. I'm very interested in all of my heritage, not just the French...I've found Wyandot/Huron ancestry in my family and have started researching this part of my heritage. I would really appreciate any help with knocking down this brick wall... any hint, any confirmation that the names sound familiar, anything!
