Hello Jim and Wendy,
I can't get through to your e-mail address (it says your mailbox is full and can't accept more messages), so I'm posting my reply to this message board hoping that you will check it in the next days.
Im very sorry for the delay in replying to your message, I was on vacation.
I'm also very exited to hear from you. As you probably have seen from the internet site, I'm researching all emigrants from my home town Tating. I have started writing an article on that subject for an annual publicationof a local historical society. Originally I planned to get that article into this year's issue, but I have collected so much information that I will not be able to finish the article within the next three weeks, so I have to wait for next year's issue (to be published in November 2001). This will give you the chance to get the information on your ancestor included in my article, if you don't mind.
Here is what I have on Claus Peter Berens and his family so far.
Claus Peter Berens was born on 14 November 1842 in Garding (5 kilometers east of Tating). I don't have the names of his parents. After his confirmation he worked with several farmers. After his marriage (place and date unknown) to Anna Elisabeth Moeller (place and date of birth unknown) he moved to Tating where he earned his living as a laborer.
On 11 February 1869 his son Peter Volquard Berens was born in Tating, on 18 June 1871 his son Johannes Jacob Berens.
On 25 January 1873 he applied for the permission to emigrate to the US where he hoped to have better chances to earn his living. On 17 February 1873 the permission was granted.
On 16 November 1872 he sold his house with 13 Demat (about 6.5 hectare) land in a public auction. He had owned that house from 1868. Today's address would be Lokert 9, Tating.
On 20 March 1873 he sold his furniture and household items.
He must have left shortly afterwards. I don't have any further details on him.
I would love to receive further information on the further history of that family after they came to the U.S., where he settled, how he earned his living, when and where he and his wife died, if they had more children, where their children lived, etc. Maybe you even have a photo of Claus Peter and Anna Elisabeth Berens and/or their children, and maybe you could sent me a laser photocopy for my report. If you don't mind I would include that information in the book to be published in November 2001.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
