Wilfred Berndt, St. Charles, Ill., writes home, 1942
St. Charles (Kane County, Illinois) Chronicle, June 25, 1942, Service Notes. Here's something you will note, Billy Berndt is in London, England. He writes under date of June 4. Dear Miss Paschal (the editor): Once again the time has come when I must write to you and ask you to change my address. I think this will be about the last time it will be changed until I get back to the States, which won't be any too soon for me, even though I am enjoying myself. My new address is Corp. Wilfred L. Berndt, Hq. U.S. Army, A.G.D., A.P.O. 887, New York, N.Y.
Besides getting mixed up with the money situation and the rationing the boys over here are getting along great. They all seem to like it here but I'm afraid we all have that feeling "that we like the States much much better."
There are several of the boys from the Fox River Valley here in England also, in fact they are in the same outfit. Corp. Pete Zavitz from St. Charles, Pvt. 1 cl Leonard Anderson from Batavia, and several other boys from Aurora.
There are plenty of things to see and do and they keep us busy. They have plenty of cinemas to attend, dances and stage shows are also popular. The parks also do their share in keeping the boys occupied, such as swimming, boating, band concerts, etc.
We are living right in the city of London. We are billeted in houses that were vacated by wealthy people before the war. There are magnificent fireplaces in almost every room (they are now covered up so they won't be wrecked), tile bath rooms (Mine happens to be black and yellow), showers, hot and cold running water, sculptured murals on the walls, etc. So you see we live in style, almost.
Thanking you for everything you have done for me and also for changing my address so many ties, I remain, Bill Berndt. (Posted as a courtesy, not related.)
