Hi Beth, and all,
This is a family that I don't know what to do with. I can't make a connection to any other family. And some of the data I have is contradictory. What I've been doing (and I recommend it to all family historians) is collecting everything I can about them and putting things together that go together. Then when something new comes in, I integrate it into my sketch/history. Someday (and this has happened in other branches, other families), a bit of information will come along that links this family to some other.
In the meantime, here is what I have. (Your Margaret Ailene is #a2,b1 in the following outline.) Please, everyone, add to it, correct what I have wrong. Send documents if you hhave them.
JOHN WILLIAM BRASHEARS/BESHIRES
John William Brashears was said to travel west from Durham, NC, in company with George W. Wilson and wife Luella Spurlin and came to Shiloh, TN.This story may be stretched from the truth behind family traditions. It is possible that his father or grandfather lived near Durham, moved to SC (where some of the family is recorded as having been born), then moved in the early years of the 1800's to central Tennessee.John William was probably born in Maury or Lawrence Co, TN, then moved c1860 the two or three counties west that would have brought him to Shiloh in Hardin Co, TN.Such a scenario would sort of fit with the movement of William Brashear (also Bratcher), b. 1741, lived in North Carolina, then served in the Rev in SC, then applied for pension in Maury Co, TN, in 1819.
In or near Shiloh, John William Brashears met and married Martha Ann Priscilla Essary, b. ?, d. c1904 (when Emma, d/o C.C. Beshires, was about 12).During the battle of Shiloh, Union soldiers threatened to burn the cabin in the peach orchard, where they lived, so they left.According to family legend, Mary E. Beshires, their first child, was born that night.John William Beshires and Martha re-settled in Silerton, Hardeman Co, TN, where they also had sons, John T., Christopher Columbus, and Benjamin Field Beshires.John William Brashears/Beshires deserted this family when the youngest child was about 6 or 8 years old (i.e. about 1878-80), went to Texas with another woman, and was said to have died at about age 90.Martha died in Silerton, TN, about 1896-98 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Old Hickory Cem.
After John William Beshires abandoned his family, Martha wouldn't tell the kids anything about him, but she did tell her best friend, Satira Helen (Savage) Hankins, mother to the wife of Benjamin Field Beshiers (that's the way he spelled the surname).Satira was said to pass all this information down to her granddaughter, Ina Hankins, who then passed it to Jim Beshires of Decatur, GA, and Willard Beshires, who corresponded with each other several times regarding the family background.Much of this sketch is based on those old letters, through reports from Wade Beshirs, Jim Beshires, and others.
John A. Beshires, s/o Christopher Columbus Beshires, had a job as a school-bus driver. He would sometimes take his uncle, Benjamin Field Beshiers, and others to visit Shiloh Park and the "cabin in the peach orchard," which apparently wasn't burned after all.It finally rotted, and the Shiloh Park authorities replaced it with a replica.
John William Brashears/Beshires reportedly had a brother named Hugh Beshires, who was the father of Seth Wilson Beshires, who married C.C.'s daughter, Emma.Seth and Emma were cousins, according to Bessie Beshires, gm/o Daniel Wade Beshires.John William and Hugh also had a sister named Jenny Beshires. If this is true, John William Beshires was a s/o Jason W. Brashears/Boshears.
In the 1880 Census, ?Bollinger Co, MO (I don't think this is him, but may be another sibling to Jason, etc):
Bashears, John 36, b. c1814, GA, farmer, fa b. SC
Mary C. 37, b. c1813, GA, wife, fa b. SC

Hugh W. 11, b. c1869, MO, son

James H. 6, b. c1874, MO, son
John 3, b. c1877, TN, son
Charlie 8/12, b. Sep 1879, son
After John William Beshires left, Martha may have changed her name to Margaret Ann, called herself "Peggy" Roach, and married c1861, in TN, a man named Lewis Beshears, b. c1814-1816, possibly a son of Peter and Rebecca Brashears, of Lawrence Co, TN, and Tishomingo Co, MS.The death certificate of Christopher Columbus "Lum" Beshires lists Lewis Beshires and Margaret Ann "Peggy" Roach as parents. The death certificate ofBenjamin Field Beshires lists his parents as Lewis Beshires and Elizabeth Roach. contact: Daniel Wade Beshires, of TN: 901/837-2007
