JACOB RUSSELL OF WASHINGTON COUNTY
George Ely Russell, C.G., F.A.S.G., F.N.G.S.
Hans Jacob Rosell, son of Jacob Rosell and his wife Elsbetha Weiss, was baptized in Mettmenstetten Parish, Canton Zurich, Switzerland, on 26 May 1689. In that parish on 6 November 1714 he married Verena Weber/Waber of Evertswil, Hausen Parish. She was baptized 10 November 1689. They are listed in Mettmenstetten on the 1720 register of householders. They were Protestants. Hans Jacob Rosell was in 1727 described as a schoolmaster of Heferswil (Hefertschweil, Mettmenstetten parish), at the baptism of their son:1
Hans Jacob Rosell was baptized 16 March 17 1727/8 and was described as of Hefertschweil and among the emigrants from Obermettmenstetten to Pennsylvania on a list dated 1 May 1743.2 In or shortly after 1753 he married Maria Margaretha Brossman, probably in Berks County, Pennsylvania, where the baptisms of some of the children were recorded in the period 1754-1761 at the Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church (in present Jackson Township, Lebanon County), and in 1757 at Stouchsburg Christ Lutheran Church (present Marion Township, Berks County). At the auction sale at Tulpehocken of the estate of Henry Boyer the list of taxables in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, for 1758. At Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church on 29 June 1760, Jacob Rossel and wife Margaret sponsored the baptism by the Rev. J. William Otterbein of John, son of Jacob Gassert.4 Rosell was naturalized at Tulpehocken on 11 April 1763.5
Of Berks County, on 25 April 1762 Jacob Rossel purchased from James Smith of Frederick County, Maryland, the 157-acre Peter¹s Choice, a part of Stoney Glade.6 This tract is located southwest of present Keedysville, Washington County, near Porterstown. In 1764 he was the patentee of the 208-acre Resurvey of Stoney Glade, located south of Keedysville.7
On 5 March 1766 he was among Frederick County residents signing a petition.8 By deed dated 2 May 1767, Jacob Russel, stone mason, and wife Margaret sold to George Penther, weaver, 50-acre Penther¹s Purchase, a part of The Resurvey of Stoney Glade.9 (In 1776 Washington County was established from Frederick County.) By deed dated 24 June 1778 Jacob Russell paid 88 pounds to James Chapline of Washington County for 44-acre The Resurvey of Hills and Dales and adjoining Vineyard.10 In 1790 Jacob Russell was head of family in Washington County, living with his wife, but no other persons in the household.11 On 3 February 1790 James Chapline conveyed to Jacob Russell a 50-1/2-acre part of The Resurvey of Hills and Dales and Vineyard, confirming and supplementing the 1778 deed which failed to contain all the land intended.12 On 10 May 1790 Jacob received a warrant for the resurvey of 253 acres, to be called Jacob¹s Rest, parts of Stoney Glade, Little Worth, and Hills Dales and the Vineyard; the resurvey was made and patent granted on 30 April 1791.13 On March 1791 Jacob Russell purchased from Peter Thomas for 28 pounds the 7-acre Brunner¹s Lot, part of The Resurvey of Stoney Glade, which he conveyed back to Thomas for the same price on 12 November 1791. On 17 December 1791 he paid 25 pounds to Peter Thomas for 5 acres of The Resurvey of Stoney Glade.14
In the 1783 Washington County Assessment Record, Jacob Russel, Sr. was taxed for 200 acres of Stoney Glade (155 acres woodland, 3 acres meadow, 42 acres arable), total value 203 pounds; improvements valued at 30 pounds; 4 horses and 24 black cattle valued at 51 pounds; other property worth 6 pounds; total appraised value 290 pounds.
Jacob Russell died on 7 February 1798 age 71 years, undoubtedly at his homestead near Keedysville, and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Keedysville United Brethren in Christ Church.15 The Widow Russell, age 45+, was head of the family in Lower Antietam Hundred, Washington County, in 1800, with one other female age 10-15 and one female under 10.16 (Keedysville was in Lower Antietam Hundred.) By quit claim deed dated 25 June 1803, Jacob¹s heirs sold their respective shares in the 250-acre Stoney glade to their brother Jacob Russell for 1,556 pounds. They were identified as: George Russell of Washington County, Pa.; Henry Russell of Bedford County,Pa.; John Russell of Washington County, Md.; John Fluck and wife Sarah of Frederick County, Md.; Henry Fluck and wife Lizzy of Rockingham County, Va.; Christian Middlecalf and wife Rosanna of Washington County, Md.; and Catherine Barkman of Baltimore City, Md.19 On 15 December 1803 Jacob¹s relict Margaretta Russell conveyed property to their son Jacob Russell.20

Franz Brossman, parents unknown, was born around 1693 in Germany*. He married at about the age of 27 to (Anna) Clara Elisabetha Rudolph on June 6, 1724*. The marriage date is cited in the LDS 1992 Microfiche file, page 77,210, in Baden, Heidelberg, Walldengelloch. Franz immigrated to the colonies in 1739. Franz died October 18, 1749 at Stouchsburg, Pennsylvania* and is buried at Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg*. The following notes were contributed to the Drummond collection by Schuyler Brossman. Contributed to him by Annette Burgert, of Worthington, Ohio in October, 1982. "More notes on Frantz Brossman, Reihen, Germany, Lutheran Churchbook (6920 Sinsheim, Elsenz) Germany. Nicholas Brossman, citizen here, and Elisabetha first appear in the church record with the Baptism of a daughter: Anna Dorothea, baptized 10 Aug 1701. They also had a son, Ludovicus, b. 12 Dec 1705. No further records of their family at Reihen. Waldengelloch, Lutheran Churchbook (6920 Sinsheim, Elsenz) Germany. Married (2) 21 May 1707 - Nicholaus Brostman, Drehrer (a turner) and Anna Maria, the widow Wipf. Married (3) 24 Nov 1711 - Meister Nicolaus Brosman, Trehrer (turner) and widower, and Magdelene, widow of Johannes burckle at Hilspach. In the baptism records of their children, it is indicated that Magdalena is Catholic. Children: 1. Johann Michel b. 25 Apr 1713: 2. Margaretha Barbara b. 5 Sep 1715. Died 8 Aug 1717 - Nicholaus Brosmann, Dreher here, age 64 years. (therefore born about 1653 - 1717 less 64 = 1653. Married on 6 Jun 1724 -Frantz Brossman, a Treher, and Anna Clara, daughter of the late Hanz Jerg Rudolph. Hans Jerg Rudolph married 18 Nov 1680 Catharina Margaretha Fessler. Their daughter Clara Elisabetha was baptized 11 Mar 1700. She is evidently the Anna Clara who married Frantz Brossman." end of report. 1994 note: impossible to determine if church records cited above relate to Frantz -Brossman without further investigation.
Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County, Pa. Vol I of 2, publ, Beers & Co., 1909. p. 1659, vol I. The Brossman family is one of the oldest in Berks county, dating back to the early part of the eighteenth century. Francis (Frantz) Brossman, a German by birth, so tradition says, was one of the Schoharie County, N.Y., settlers who came to Berks county between 1723 & 1728. When Berks county was organized in 1752, he was an inhabitant of Heidelberg township. The following year, 1753, he paid eighteen pounds tax, and in 1754 he paid twenty-two pounds tax. This shows him to have been a large landowner. His remains are undoubtedly buried at St. Daniel's (Corner) Church, which was the spiritual home of all those early pioneers...". Schuyler Brossman, Rehrersburg, Pa. 7 Dec 1971. Brossman Family Historian.
Part of Drummond collection: "Frantz Brossman, was aged 45 years when he arrived in Philadelphia, Pa on the ship Friendship on 3 Sep 1739. According to his age he would have been born in 1693-1694. Available records indicate he had the following children: Anna Magdalena, m. Johannes Kistler; Justina Catarina, b. before 1734; Frantz Sebastian Brossman, b. 28 Aug 1728, d. 26 Nov 1797, bur Christ Luth. Ch., Stouchsburg, Pa. Served in Berks Co., Militia, Rev. War, M. Maria Saloma ----; Maria Appolonia Brossman, b. ca. 1732, Baltser Umbonhauer, lived Bernville, Pa.; Anna Margaretha Brossman, b. ca. 1733, m. Jacob Rossell; Christina, b. ca. 1738; Johannes, b. either 1739 or 1742, d. 26 Aug 1807, m. Anna Maria Heilman, b.1742, d. 1812. Frantz Brossman, the immigrant, came from Germany. He died without a will and an inventory of his estate in Jan 1750, recorded in the Lancaster County Pa courthouse lists his widow as Clarlis or Corlis. He died in October 1749 and was buried 18 Oct 1749 probably in the cemetery of Christ Lutheran Church of Stouchsburg as this is recorded in the church records... A transcription of the records are to be found in the Historical Society of Berks Co, Reading, Pa. It should be noted that the part of Lancaster county in which Frantz lived later became, in 1752, Berks County. Frantz Brossman was among the founders of Christ Church in 1743." *Source: B-1 through
