Hi Miranda,

As promised this is what I have. The surname Bettencourt, Betancourt is derived from Bethancourt, the name of a town located in the ancient province of Picardy, located in Northewest France. Thus the surname originated as toponymic name to identify a person born in Bethancourt. The original barer of the name was Josef de Bthancourt, Lord of Bethancourt and of Granville who married Maria de Bethancourt Florenville e Sedan around 1360. His son, also called Josef, was the discoverer of the Canary Islands. His grandsons, Henrique and Maciot de Bethancourt were Governor and Lord of the Canary Islands. A descendent of the above family, Gasper de Bethancourt, established a branch a branch of the family in Portugal where he married Guimer de SA. They first settled in the island of Madeira. In Portugal the surname took the form Bettencourt. From Portugal branches of the family were established in a number of Spanish provinces where the surname took the form Betancourt.
