I've been told Bethany is a Hebrew word (meaning House of ? [poor/poverty/figs?? any one else know]) and since vowels are not spelt in Hebrew their are a variety of anglicised spellings such as bethany, bettany, betney etc.

I'm no expert but bethune would certainly seem to have the same constant sounds in it's make-up.
