Hi, Myrna
I don't know if we're cousins, but I descend from Costodio Jozé de Athaide de Bettencourt (born 1823.He had 3 brothers, Antonio, Manoel, and Matheus, ALLL born in Guadalupe, Graciosa, respectively, in 1814, 1816, 1819.
They were the children of Felicio Correa de Bettencourt and Roza da Soledade, both natives of Praia, Graciosa.I have gotten these lines back a couple of generations, but between the dim microfilm, tedious handwriting, and the STRANGE naming patterns, it has been SLOW, plodding research.Because of this difficulty, I have not yet taken the time to follow Costodio's brothers' lives forward, but will gladly share what I've discovered about their ascendants.
Let me know if we connect on these.Maybe you can help me solve the mystery of Costodio José's wife, Luisa -?- (supposedly CHIBANTE, born in Conn, according to the 1880 LA Fed census).Costodio died at sea between 1845-1852 and Luisa took their small son, George William, down to New Orleans to live. There were some BETTENCOURT shipbuilders in N.O. at that time, and I suspect they may have been related, although I have never been able to prove it :-(
Hoping to address you as "cousin" in my next e-mail, I am
Augusta Elmwood
New Orleans, LA
