a conversation with my grandmother piqued my curiousity about my surname. she tells me that my name is from my great great grandfather on her father's side. my great great grandfather met my great great grandmother at the jamacia and west indies college. he had come over from america and she from guyana. my great great grandmother returned to guyana pregnant with my great grandfather. so even though my great great grandparent's never stayed together, my great great grandmother still gave my great grandfather his father's surname, Betton, as opposed to her own which was Prophet. my grandmother was actually born a Betton and when her union with my grandfather produce a son out of wedlock - my father- she gave him her name. in adulthood she gave him the option of taking his father's surmame, Blake, but he stuck with Betton. unfortunately, my grandmother could not tell me what my great great grandfather's christian name was. all she could tell me was that he dug wells(?) for a living.
