I'm wondering if anyone has found a specific marriage record for John Bigg(s)/Bigge, who is in the records of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia, by 15 Feb. 1648/9. Lower Norfolk Co. records speak of his voyaging to England several times, so I think it's a good possibility he was born in England. John was married to a Joan/Johanna by 17 Jan. 1652/3, when he imported his wife from England to Virginia. She is named in his 4 Sept. 1694 will in Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia. The probable birthdates of John's children suggest that, if Joan/Johanna was the mother of all of the children, John Biggs married Joan/Johanna between 1630 and 1640. To my knowledge, no one has found a clear record linking John to a specific Bigg(s)/Bigge family in England, though some researchers have suggested his mother may be a Katherine Biggs who died testate in the parish of St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, London with a will dated 6 Aug. 1675. I have seen suggestions that John's wife Joan/Johanna was a daughter of John's neighbor Tristram Norsworthy, or a Sayer, since Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia, records suggest he was a cousin to Francis and Thomas Sayer. I have seen no proof of either maiden name for Joan/Johanna. It occurs to me that if we could locate a marriage record for a John Bigg(s)/Bigge in England in the correct time frame, to a woman named Joan or Johanna, we may be able to pinpoint his place of origin in Virginia. I am wondering if anyone has done any research on this particular problem. In the LDS IGI, I find the following possibilities: A John Bygge m. Joan Jarvis, 20 Jan. 1630, Benenden, Co. Kent; John Bigg m. Joan Beeton, 1 May 1632, St. Margaret, Westminster, London; John Biggs m. Joan Wall, 24 June 1636, St. Michael's, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire; John Bigg m. Joane Grubb, 5 Nov. 1645, in Little Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire. Has anyone researching this Bigg(s)/Bigge family done any research on any of these marriages, to see if one of them could perhaps be a match to the John Bigg with wife Johanna who came to Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia? I welcome thoughts of other Bigg researchers about this idea of tracking marriage records in England. Notify Administrator about this message?
