Thanks for the response. Apologies that I apparently posted "William and John" when it should have been "William and James."

We may have a connection. My husband's line goes back via Sophia Birchall b. 1838. She was daughter of James b.c.1800, watchmaker, and granddaughter of William, also a watchmaker, who died on 25.7.1842 age 74. William and James born outside London according to 1841 census. The other children of James were William, James junior, b.c. 1835 - who was a merchant's clerk in 1851, Harriet, Mary, Emma and George.
