Charles, For 15 years I was a miner in the Wigan area, in 1970 I had a change of career and worked for 31 years in Local Government.
I am now retired at the age of 60. In the 1980s I decided to research my family tree and discovered that I was a seventh generation miner. I traced my Birchall family (all in the Wigan area back to approx 1815. Now that I have retired, I decided to look again at my search notes and using the internet discovered this web site. Where I spotted your e-mail.
Looking at my tree there is a James Birchall born 1856 son of my great great grandfather Joseph (1853-1924). Perhaps this is too late a date.
Before that I have my great great great (phew) grandfather who some time in 1815 is listed with 6 sons but I only record my direct line ie Thomas and do not know the name of the other 5 sons, but I will try again to see if there is a James amongst them.

Here is the early part of the tree

Joseph Birchall Married Mary? (Parish records 4th Feb 1814)
Son1 Son2 Son3 Son4 Son5 Son6 Thomas born 1815
Thomas (miner) married Ann Dawson 12July 1841
Margaret(b1849) William(b1851)James(b1856)SarahAnn(b1860) Joseph(1853-1924.

note Joseph being my great Grandfather.

Well Charles reading all this seems confusing to me hope you can understand it.
If it is usefull to you I could as stated earlier look at Josephs unnamed sons
Regard Edmund Birchall
