This fine couple emigrated to the US, and appear in the 1880 US Census in Philadelphia, with William working as a shoemaker and several children (ages 14-26) still at home.
Also appearing in said census, in Philadelphia, is my great-great-grandfather, one Edmund Birchall, aged 30 at the time, a shoemaker (hmm!) whose parents emigrated from England.
I'm wondering whether anyone can confirm my strong suspicion that Edmund is the son of William and Mary, trained in the family trade, and the elder sibling of their still-at-home kids in that census, and also, whether anyone can tell me about William's ancestry in England.
