My great-grandfather was a Joseph Birkett, originally from near Keswick, Cumbria, who emigrated to South Africa around 1900 (died Cape Town 1916), with his three daughters (Margaret, b. Keswick 1880, d. SA 1964, married Harry Chew; Edith d. Cape Town 1946, unmarried; Sarah Elizabeth d. SA 1955, unmarried). But I don't think they had any Birkett relatives in SA. I have details of Joseph's parents, etc, if you need them.
