Hi,

My name is Mike Birkett and I have just started researching into my family's history.

Unfortunately, I haven't got too far with it yet, just able to go back to the mid 19th. century and without a lot of detail, though I hope more will be forthcoming quite soon and I will post it here as soon as I have it.

To the best of my knowledge the Birkett family have always lived in the South Lancashire (now Merseyside) for four generations to the early or mid 19th. century.

Great great grandfather William was living in Clipsley Lane, Haydock, before moving later in life to 420 Haydock Lane.

This is where my grandfather George Birkett (b. 1877 d. 1939) was living when, as a 25 year old coalminer, he married 19 year old Catherine Mannion on August 16th. 1902 at St. James' Church, Haydock.

She was a tablehand at Earlestown Brick Works adjacent to the Lyme Pit colliery in Grange Valley, Haydock, living in Penkford Street on Newton Common, Newton-le-Willows, with father Bernard (an Irish immigrant from Galway) and mother Catherine.

They set up home in 202, Common Road, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire (again now Merseyside) where they brought up their family of 7 children (in order of age, youngest first):

Nora
George
Annie
Winnie
Agnes
Bill

More details to follow when possible.
