Hi Marlene, I doubt there is a direct connection, but Russell's family have been in this area for centuries. In Keswick, at the turn of the century,George Birkett married Rose Pridmore and they had 7 children: Herbert who went to Oz to work in the opal mines, then came back to Keswick to work on the Launches.William was a policeman who worked in Bolton all his adult life(after being in the Grenadiers). Allan(Russells dad) was in the Household Cavalry and then came home to run the launch co. until his death in 1973.The girls were Greta,Roma,Alice and Amy(who is still with us!)Greta emigrated to NZ before the ww2.Roma went to Altrincham, near Manchester. Alice stayed single and travelled the world as a nanny.Amy stayed in Keswick all her life and stayed single.
Russell and I live in Keswick(we have a guesthouse) and have two children Allan and Louise. If this is at all enlightening, let us know. The only other thing I can think of is that Amy has a cousin Vera in Manchester with a son in Canada but I'm not certain about the Birkett connection.
