Wendy,

This is quite interesting for me. I was looking for information on on Amanda Roxanna Bisanar (c.1847-1925) who married my 3rd great uncle Robert Henry Field (c.1840-aft.1910) in Caldwell Co. in 1868....and discovered that Amanda is kin to me through the Starnes line. I was also interested to see that your 2nd great grandmother married a Shell....as I am also kin by marriage to the Schells of Catawba Co. though I don't know much about them. It's fascinating how interconnected all these old Southern families are.

Amanda Roxanna Bisanar was a daughter of Simon Bisanar (1806-1877) and Rachel Starnes (1810-1887). She married Robert Henry Field who was a son of Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867) and Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885). They lived in Caldwell Co. in 1870, but had moved to Charlotte by 1880. Robert and Amanda had three children, a daughter whose name was given as Salina in one census and Claud in another, born c. 1869, and two sons, Robert P. Field, born 1874, and Henry L. Field, born 1886. Amanda died in Hickory in 1925. I suspect she had gone there to visit, or to live with, her sister in law, Lillie Caroline Wilson (1857-1937) wife of Thomas Elswick Field (1843-1912). I am kin to these folks through my mother's father, John Levi Field (1899-1963).

I am kin to the Starnes family through my mother's mother, Eunice Virginia Stearns (1906-1983) wife of John L. Field. I had never seen the middle name Cotton given for Rachel Rice, nor had I seen the name Mary Katherine Shattuck given for the wife of Joseph Starnes, Sr. What I had for Joseph Sr.'s wife was "Katherine, probably Carlock."

My line down from the Field family goes as follows:

William Field (1698-1748) & Jane (possibly Benton) d. aft.1773
William Field (bef.1727-1805) & Lydia (probably Elswick, 1743-c.1829)
Jeremiah Field (c.1764-1830) & Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859)
Elswick Sherwood Field (1808-1867) & Guilianna Lindsay (1807-1885)
John Andrew Field (1846-1883) & Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906)
Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902) & Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947)
John Levi Field (1899-1963) & Eunice Virgnia Stearns (1906-1983) my grandparents.

My line down from the Starns/Stearns family goes:

Frederick Staring/Starns (c.1700-1775) & Mary Goldman
Joseph Starns (c.1730-1779) & Katherine ?
Jacob Starns (1775-1848) & Esther Wentz
Valentine Stearns (c.1800-1875) & Olivia Ritch
Dulin Stearns (1836-1863) & Rusha Elizabeth King
Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) & Mary Jane Beachum
Eunice Virginia Stearns (1906-1983) & John L. Field

Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1893), mentioned above as the wife of Dulin Stearns, was also descended from the Starnes family. Her father was Rev. Harmon Daniel King (1805-1906) of Union Co., NC. Her mother was H. D. King's first wife, Mary V. Starnes (1814-1865). I am not certain who Mary V. Starnes' parents were but believe them either to have been Nathaniel Starnes (c.1785-aft.1860) and Susannah Bost, or Valentine Starnes (1792-1880) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Richardson. Both Nathaniel and this Valentine were sons of David Starns (1758-1833) who was a son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c.1724-1779).

One of my grandmother's brothers, Clyde Casey Stearns (1895-1969) married Sue Estelle Schell of Conover, NC. My great aunt Susie didn't die til like 1998. I remember her talking about the Schells of Catawba County a lot, but am afraid I don't remember many details.

I hope we might compare notes.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
