"Would you happen to have any Harriets?"LOL--- A few.
Dear "cousin."I have some info on your ancestor. However, I have nothing following her marriage, so I would be very pleased if you could provide me with some lists of her children, grandchildren, etc.
My sources for this "branch" of the family are pretty thin, and include ref. to the LDS website, which I do not trust on a "stand alone" basis... I have found too many inaccuracies from that source.I must also confess that this was one of the first families I began to research, so my files are not as good as they should be.That said:
LDS claims she was born December 09, 1810, Voluntown, Windham County, CT.I would be MUCH happier if that were verified by the Barbour Collection, but it is not.Again, they claim she marr. in Norwich, New London County, CT, but I would be pleased to hear from you about another source to verify that.
Harriet was allegedly the dau. of Samuel Bitgood & Elizabeth Worden.

I have striven, unsuccessfully thus far, to prove if "Samuel" was a son of "John Snr." and so a brother of my ancestor, "John, 2d" Bitgood (b. 1761, d. 1833).There are curious "links.""John, 2d" was also born in RI -- Kingstown. He also removed with his family to Voluntown, about 1796.
However, there are numerous "anamolies" with this family...
1) A "Samuel Goodbit" (sic) is found in Hopkinton, RI, in the 1790 Census (the same town where "John Bilgood" (sic) is found). This "Bilgood" is actually my ancestor. There is a problem however, in that this Samuel's household includes one male "16 and over," one male "under 16," and also includes one female. If this is indeed the "correct" Samuel, then who could the female and youth be?He was not alleged to have married before 1792, nor had a son before 1793.This does not compare to the later Census records.
2)If it was his "extended family," i.e. say his mother and a younger brother, there is still a problem, as there was a "John Goodbit" (sic) living in Richmond, RI, as head of household with one male over age 16, 3 males under age 16, 2 females, no "other free persons," and no slaves. [Source: 1790 U.S. Census, Richmond, Washington Co. RI].This "John Goodbit" is presumed to be John Snr., still very much alive and kicking!
3) However, if this family group is John Snr., it too begs several questions. The three known (and verified) sons of John Snr. were already gone.Jonathan had died in the AmRev.Remington survived his service in the AmRev and was already living in Shelburne, VT (1790 Census).John Bitgood (1761-1833) also survived his service in the AmRev and as "John Bilgood" was in Hopkinton in 1790.So, assuming the one adult male is John, one of the females must, or should be his wife Jemine/Jemima (assuming she were still alive). But who were THESE three boys? One could be Joseph (b. 1774-78).I thought perhaps one could be Samuel, but as he is listed in the 1810 Census as "over 45" he was born before 1765, and in the 1830 Census he is ""60 to 70" and thus was born between 1760 & 1770.This gives a window of between 1760 & 1765 for his birth, making him "over 16" in 1790.Furthermore there is that Samuel Goodbit (sic) living in Hopkinton, RI, in the 1790 Census. So it seems there are at least two unknown sons of John Snr.'s who were born between 1774 and early 1790??It would also seem there is a hitherto unknown daughter, although another Bitgood descendant has suggested that there was a Jemima Bitgood, born in the 1770s who later in the 1790s married Samuel Clark, who could be this daughter.
Well, in a nutshell, that's what I think I know.Would be happy to hear more from you.Cheers!DC
