My suspicion is that they were regular army, To the best of my knowledge, the Black Hawk War was dealt with mostly by the use of local militia, and the regular army was a delayed getting into the conflict. But I do find information that says that there were Volunteer units that came from Indiana, so I'm still looking myself. I'd be interested to find out if there were Volunteers from other areas. I'm also including a link to Carlisle Military History Museum, these folks are pretty knowledgable on such things, you might want to drop them a line too.
