INDIAN WARS

I may not have the right forum but maybe someone can help anyway. My 2nd GreatGrandfather Nathan Stanley died 1886. His tombstone reads, "Nathan Stanley b. 1802-d. 1886,
Veteran of Indian Wars". This is at Bear Creek Cemetery,Davie Co. NC. Davie is in the NW part of Old Rowan Co. NC. How do I find which Indian War and his records? Is there a list of surnames for NC Indian War soldiers? If I can find the war I would like to research the battle.
Thanks for all help.

Gerri Ann
