Archibald Overby/Overbey

I am needing help to verify Archibald Overby's participation in the Black Hawk War.

Archibald was born in 1796 in Rockingham, North Carolina. He moved to Tennesse around 1810. He married in 1820 in Sumner County, TN. He moved to Greene County, Illinois around 1828. When he died in 1878, there was a huge obituary on him. It stated that he was a veteran of three wars... War of 1812, Black Hawk War, and the Mexican American War.

I am doubting his involvement in the War of 1812 as he would hve only been 16 years old. I have searched and had others look in some resource books and there is nothing about Archibald being involved. His father was part of the war and received bounty land grants. Archibald's obit also said that he fought beside his father.

I have also done the same for the Black Hawk War. Illinois has an online database for their veterans and there is nothing on him in any various spellings of Overby. There is no record for him anywhere...

I also looked in the database for the Mexican War. There is nothing on him; however, another researcher did find that he was listed on the muster rolls for September/October 1846.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to verify or not verify his involvement in the Black Hawk? Should I contact NARA?

Thanks for any help!
