Thank you for your reply. Someone in Arkansas sent a photo of the grave of John Richey, my ancestor. It had 2 stones, one military, and the military stone said he served in "Peyton's Indiana Rangers" during the War of 1812.
I looked up a website about those early day Indiana Rangers, and one place I was told that they rotated the title of "Captain" of rangers and this was more symbolic than real. He was still a "boy" really, NOT an adult -- so it made no sense he would be made a captain of militia at that time. So I thought he must have served later in life as well. But this explanation made sense to me. So I don't think he was in the Black Hawk Wars -- just wasn't sure.
