How do I find out if an ancestor was in this war?

I found some land grants given to an Adolphus Smith for his service in the Black Hawk War in MI and was wondering if there was anyway I could find out how old this Adolphus smith was. He was in 2nd Reg Infantry under Captain Barnums and also in Comp G. under Capt Hoffman.

Any info would be appreciated

Sue
