I have a William Blackmore that was baptised on Sep 6, 1837 to Anne Blackmore in Wear Gifford. William is recorded as a "Base Child" with no father recorded. There is also a Thomas Blackmore born May 21, 1835 born to Anne Blackmore and also with no father recorded. The abode is recorded as "Poor House". This information is contained in the Wear Gifford Baptisms 1813-1840 and published by the Devon Family History Society.

I believe that the "Poor House" is a reference to the Workhouse that was located in Great Torrington. William also identifies his birthplace as Great Torrington in census records.

William married Eliza Palmer of Wear Gifford. Their daughter, Mary Ann Blackmore is my GG Grandmother.

Do you have William, Anne, or Thomas Blackmore in your records?
