Will of Joshua Blake

In the name of God Amen

I Joshua Blake of Chester District and State of South Carolina being of Sound and disposing mind and memory, and Calling to mind the uncertainy of Life and being of desirous to dispose of all such Worldy Estate as it hath please God to bless me with, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to Say.

1st It is my will tha my body be decently buried.

2d It is my will that all of my just debts be paid.

3d I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Charlotte Blake all my real and personal property after paying my just debts and after taking out the specified Legacies herafter disposed of to my children and grand son Dempsy Blake and hir death the real Estate being the plantation on which I now live to be equally divided amouny my three Daughters Jane Jackson, Lucy Backstron, (should be an "m" not an "n"-Backstrom) & Charlotte Blake my Said daughter Lucy to pay over one hundred Dollars to be equally divided between the other two Jane and Charlotte, the other property to be sold and equally divided among my children and if either of my children shall die without and heir of his or hir body begotten then that share to be equally divided among my Surviving children and to their heirs forver

4th To my duaghter Jane Jackson I give and bequeath four nigroes namely Charity, Mariah, Perry, & Lizen to hir and hir heirs for ever.

5th I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy Backstron, four nigroes namely Leroy, Lid, Lara, & Harriet to hir and hir heirs for ever.

6th I give and bequeath to my son Joshua Blake the plantation on which he lives called Douglas place to him and his heir forever. I also give and bequeath my. Said son joshua three nigroes namely Lewis, Silar, and Rachel to him and his heirs forever.

7th I give and bequeath to my Son John W. Blake the plantation Called the Ratru and place and four nigro namely Little Jack, Ellihu, Ester and Martha to him and his heirs for ever.

8th I give and bequeath to my son Green B. Blake (should be Green "A") the plantation on which he is now living and three nigroes namely Dred, Mason & Moses to him and his heirs for ever. and also the nigro woman Amy after the discease of my wife.

9th I give and bequeath to my daughter Charlotte Blake four nigroes namely Harriet, Calvin, Cyntha and Margaret to hir and hir heirs. I also give and bequeath my Said daughter Charlotte one horse Saddle & Bridle worth Sixty five Dollars, two Beds, Stead and furniture and one cow and calf.

10th I give and bequeath to my Grandson Dempsey Blake. Three nigroes namely, Mary, George and Lonesa to him and his heirs for ever. I also give and bequeath my said Grandson, One horse two Bed stead & furniture, and during his minority, that my son Green Blake & my son in law Lennul ( should be Lemuel) Jackson have Guardian ship of the Said Dempsey Blake, that they have the Keeping & managiment of the property before-mentioned and what may be coming to him from my Estate on account of his father Dempsey Blakes Estate to dispose of us what they may think best until he is twenty one years of age and that they of age and that they give him a good English education.

If the Said Dempsey Blake should die having no heir or heirs of his body begotten then whatever is herin willed to him Shall be divided between my six children, namely, Jane Lucy, Joshua, Hohn W., Green and Charlotte Blake if living or their Legal heirs share and share alike; and if any of my said childlren should ide, leaving no heirs of his or hir body begotten, what is herein willed to him hir or them, to be equally divided among the rest of my said children or their Legal heirs, to them and their heirs for ever and lastly I do constitute and appoint, my son Green Blake & son-in Law Semnel (Lemuel ) Jackson Executors of this Will and Testament, by me made heretofore, and contained on this one sheet of paper.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand, and affixed my seal this 27th day of February 1844 Joshua Blake(Legal Signature) Signed Sealed published and declared as and for the las will and Testament of the above named Joshua Blake in the presence of us
