CHAPTER FIVE:
WILLIAM HUGH BLAKENEY CHAPTER.
JAMES THOMAS BLAKENEY LINE:
54.(8) WILLIAM HUGH BLAKENEY
Born in 1774, in Chesterfield County, SC.
Died in 1842 in Montgomery County, TN.
Married Nancy Ann Welch; daughter of William Welsh.
She was born about 1780 and died about 1817.
Children of William Hugh Blakeney and Nancy Ann Welsh Blakeney were:
SEVENTH GENERATION:
54.(8) (1) James Thomas Blakeney born in 1797.
54.(8) (2) Eleanor Blakeney born about 1798.
54.(8) (3) Jane Blakeney, born about 1800.
54.(8) (4) Nancy Ann Blakeney, born in 1803.
54.(8) (5) Mary Blakeney, born in 1806.
What motivated a family to pack up everything they had and move to a frontier where they had no idea what to expect? Many families did it, and the trip was not that easy. Can you imagine how bumpy that wagon ride must have been? Camping out under the stars must have been both thrilling and threatening. Keeping track of rations, children, and animals and watching out for dangers, both real and imagined, these pioneers braved it all for a promise.
According to various sources, a wagon train in the early 1800's traveled about fourteen miles each day. Did they sing? What did they talk about? Did they keep a diary?
What were the roads like when the Blakeneyfamily migrated South? Perhaps they followed the Upper Road which existed in 1806 as part of the road system built by the U. S. Government to get mail back and forth from New Orleans, Louisiana and Washington, D.C.
With the War of 1812 there came many wagon roads which were used by settlers as a result of the improvement of old Indian trading paths to roads suitable for wagons, cannons, and troops. The Federal Road connected with the Upper Road at Columbus, Georgia and with the Fall Line Road at Augusta, Georgia. To continue westward toward Natchez, Mississippi, The Federal Road joined McCleary's Road at Fort St. Stephens in Alabama. The joining of these two roads gave the east-west traveler a direct connection between Natchez, Mississippi and Charleston, South Carolina.
The Blakeney wagon train probably joined the Upper Road or the Fall Line Road through North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Then, at Columbus, Georgia, they might have taken the Federal Road and McCleary's Road to the Tallahala Creek area (at Ellisville, Mississippi) near General Jackson's Military Road (built during the War of 1812 to carry troops from New Orleans to the Tombigbee and Tennessee Rivers and a more direct route to Nashville, Tennessee). Today, the paths taken by Interstate Highway 59 (from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi) and by the U.S. Highway 45 (to Columbus, Mississippi) are what is left of General Jackson's Military Road in Louisiana and Mississippi (the Alabama and Tennessee sections are mostly local county roads today).

Mississippi Territory included the land known today as Mississippi State and Alabama State. Florida claimed the land South of the 31 Line to the Mississippi River, which later became parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The Native Tribes controlled the lands before being taken by the white man.The Choctaw's Indians homed most of Southern Alabama and Mississippi. They were formerly connected with the Chickasaw Indians and crossed the Mississippi River together from the West.Their first appearance in History was in 1540, when their giant chief, Tuscaloosa the "Black Warrior," opposed De Soto's march in what was perhaps the most terrible Indian battle ever fought in the Eastern United States. They made their first Treaty with the United States in 1786.In 1820 they sold their last remaining lands east of the Mississippi river and agreed to move to "Oklahoma," but the removal of all the Indians was not completed until about twenty years later.Even then a considerable band, known later as the Mississippi Choctaw, remained behind and there were hundreds in Louisiana. Then there was Andrew Jackson, in a letter to John C. Calhoun, August 25, 1820 he wrote, "And it is now discovered that nothing can be done without corrupting their Chiefs. This is so inconsistent with the principals of our government that it is high time the Legislature should exercise its function and pass all laws for the regulation of the Indians."
During the administration of John Quincy Adams (President of the United States), "Treaty after treaty obtained large chunks of Indian land."Thirty-seven CENTS an acre was the going price. When Andrew Jackson became President of the United States in 1829, as the "Choctaw Indians phrased it, The DEVIL became the President of the United States." In mid- May 1830, the Bill for the removal of the Indians passed Congress by a vote 102-97, on May 28, Andrew Jackson signed it into law.The Creeks homed the land later becoming Alabama. Comanches homed Texas. Apaches and Najavos homed New Mexico and Nevada. There were also the Pawnees, Crows, Kiowas, Shawness, Snakes and many other tribes across what is now the U.S.The Reconstruction Act of March 2, 1867, the seceded States with the exception of Tennessee, were divided into five Military Districts each presided over by a Major-General supported by armed Troops. Virginia was Military District No. 1.
North and South Carolina District 2.Georgia, Florida and Alabama District No. 3. Arkansas and Mississippi District 4. Texas and Louisiana District 5. The Troops maintained order by force thru 1877.There were Army Forts in every state.Mississippi had several, Fort Confederation, Fort Nogales, Fort Adams. There was Fort San Fernando and Fort Pickering near Memphis. This was not an open arm, loving state to move to when the first Blakeney's moved here.
During this period, the United States was fighting the Choctaw and Creeks, Indians that lived in the South. In 1801 the United States and the Choctaw Indians signed a treaty of friendship. The United States, 3 rd. President was "Thomas Jefferson at this time. The treaty was all about obtaining land from the Choctaw within the Mississippi Territory, a value of two thousand dollars in goods and merchandise and three sets of blacksmiths' tools were given to the Choctaws for the land. Then there was the Treaty with the Choctaws of 1802, 1803, 1805, and 1816.On August 30, 1813, the Creek Indians slew nearly 250 Alabama settlers, resulting in the calling out of 2,500 men to punish and stop the Indians.Andrew Jackson led the rebellion against the Indians.President James Madison made Jackson a Major General in the US Army, in command of the Seventh Military District, a very big step up from being a state militia major general. His territory included Louisiana, Tennessee and the Mississippi Territory.Major General Jackson, staff included Sam Houston.
The main military activity was the driving of Indians out of lands which white Americans were pouring into.
Then came the Treaty with the Choctaws of 1830, on September 15, 1830, at Little Dancing Rabbit Creek, in mid- Mississippi of today's Mississippi. The Choctaws traded 10.3 million acres of land east of the Mississippi for 10.3 acres in Oklahoma and Arkansas. It was either willingly trade and move or by military force be moved. This move became a forced march, many died moving, this move became known as "The Trail of Tears."
James Thomas Blakeney and his wife and three oldest children moves to the Mississippi Territory prior to Smith County, MS. becoming Smith County, Mississippi, (sometimes between 02/01/1825 and 1826.)
Were all the Indians gone, "NO!"
Smith County was established December 23, 1833.

Who really knows?
There is a Confederate Cemetery in Clarke County, Ms., that has 241 Southern Confederate men buried there.
There is another Cemetery in Clarke County, named Enterprise Cemetery that has another 185 Confederate Servicemen buried there.
There is a war camp "P.O.W. Camp" named "Camp Douglas" near Chicago, Illinois, the land was provide by estate of Stephen A. Douglas in 1861 and named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas, where the Union Army keep Southern Confederate Prisoners, between 1862 and 1865, the camp housed more than 26,000 Southern Prisoners, as a result of harsh conditions, near 6,000 Southern Prisoners died at this camp alone.Upon the closing of the City cemetery, the bodies were moved a new cemetery - Oaks Woods. The federal government purchased a section of Oak Woods in 1867 for 4,200 known names, there were closer to 6,000 coffins were buried there. The Confederate Mound Oak Woods is the largest Confederate burial ground in all the North.
Who did what in this area?
JASPER COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI:
Milton Asbury Ryan born 1842 died 1916, a son of Rev. "Caption George Washington Ryan of Company G, 8th MS Regiment "Tolson Guard," lived near Rose Hill, Jasper County. He was afraid that the Yankees would be whipped before a Company in Jasper County was formed that he went on June 2, 1861, to Corinth, Mississippi and joined Company B, one of ten companies composing the 14th Mississippi Regiment.
On the 15th day of February 1862 at the battle of Fort Donelson, his Company was out number 4 to 1, General Grant proposed for the Company G to surrender and they were taken to Camp Douglas. In September all were exchanged for Northern Soldiers and were sent back to Mississippi. They all went to Clinton, Ms., elected Officers and re-enlisted for three more years of the war.Place under General Johnston, and participated in all of his movements for the release of Vicksburg.
When Vicksburg was surrendered, they fell back to Jackson, and then fell back to Newton. From Newton constantly fighting, retreating and destroying railroads, arriving in Atlanta, then Nashville, then Franklin, Tennessee, which was the worst slaughter pen of all the battles, with a greater loss of live on our side than any other battle of the war, the South lost nearly 7,000 men in less than three hours.Mississippi's loss was greater than any other state, nearly 1/3 of those killed were Mississippians, wounded and a prisoner of war again, this time at Camp Chase 4 miles West of Columbus, Ohio. A prison contained only about 14 acres holding about 8,000 prisoners. On June 13, 1865, the oath of allegiance was administered to all prisoners and they wall out of the gates. There were more than 2,300 Southern prisoners that died at Camp Chase.
JONES COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI:
Jones County became the home of Confederate deserters, led by a former shoemaker named Newton Knight.Jones County at the time of the war was one of the poorest counties in the state. In the census of 1860 there were only 3,323 whites and 407 slaves. The lowest slave count in the state.Newton Knight was born November 10, 1830 to Albert Knight and his wife Mason Knight, and had eleven brothers and two sisters.Sometime about 1850, Newt "shot a Negro boy" and his mother changed his birthday in the family records to 1833 to get him out of court punishment. Newt married Serena Turner, Newt was taught how to read and write by his wife.Contrary to belief, Newt enlisted as a private in the 8th Mississippi at Paulding in Jasper County on July 29, 1861. His name is on the Enlisted names only two names down from William Terrell Hosey, which married Lula Mae Blakeney, his second wife.He was furloughed until September 18, 1861, when he supposed to get back with his company at Enterprise, he never showed up, most likely because his house burned during this time.Newt reenlisted on May 15, 1862 in Company F, 7th Battalion Mississippi Volunteers.Volunteers received a $50.00 bonus for enlistment while draftees did not.He was in two severe battles and was rapidly promoted to the rank of Sergeant, after the Battle of Corinth. He deserted because of the passage of the "Twenty Negro Law" in Mississippi, which allowed wealthy planters an exemption from the army so they could tend to their slaves. This law was passed on October 11, 1862.
Newt Knight was not the only deserted because of this Law. Newt was captured, court-martialed and reduced to private in February 1863, but he disappeared again. He would not be heard from again until October 5, 1863 - the day of the murder of Major Amos McLemore.Major McLemore had been sent to Jones County to set up stations where deserters could report. He did round up 119 deserters, one way or the other within five weeks. Was this the reason he was murdered?Only a week and a day later after Newt Knight murdered McLemore, on October 13, 1863, Newt Knight formed his band, the Knight Company.
Newt keep decent records of the listing of 93 of his men, a list of casualties and capturing of his men and a list of the battles in which Knight Company took part.At least half Knight's men were native to the area.Jasper Collins, Newt Knight's right-hand man in his band, who quit the army almost instantly after the passage of the "Twenty-Negro Law," stated this it was "The Rich man's war, poor man's fight."

NOTES:
James Thomas Blakeney would have been 64 years old at the start of the Civil War.He most likely
died because of his age.
Hugh Blakeney would have been 41 years old at the start of the Civil War.
Erasmus Blakeney would have been 12 years old at the start of the Civil War.
Of the (Twelve) "MALE" Blakeney's listed on the Census of 1850, only (Four) of the "Twelve"
were on the Census of 1870.This fact shows that two-third of the Blakeney "MALES" died
between 1850 and 1870 and if that fact be true for all the Mississippi family surnames, than two-
thirds of all the Mississippi MALES lost their lives between 1850 and 1870.Maybe the cause of age
sickness or the Civil War!
